Job Description

We are looking for a Technical and Engineering Lead to provide technical leadership in all aspects of our business and to provide a bridge between the needs of our technicians on-set and our in-house operations and fulfilment teams.

The role has two primary facets; To provide technical support to our Kit Room Team (equipment rental department) and to manage our engineering department as they design, modify, build and maintain video/audio/networking systems, cables and components.

This is a senior level role with a broad remit. Strategic thinking, a proven track record of support and the ability to work across teams is essential. We expect you to be well-versed in current technological trends and to have a passion for electronics and engineering.

This role would suit someone who has worked in broadcast, live events, or on film sets. Candidates must have an in depth understanding of video and audio signals, display technologies and ideally experience with wireless video transmitter equipment, networking protocols and specialist comms/talkback equipment.

In addition, an awareness of software such as QTake, Pomfort’s Livegrade and Silverstack, Adobe packages and AVID, would be beneficial as would a thorough grasp of database and logistical software. The right candidate will be process driven with a good degree of flexibility, initiative and common sense. Will be a team player with a positive outlook and a can-do/make it happen attitude and enviable attention to detail, who can take ownership of a tasks or project and see it through to completion.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide top-level support to the team of Kit Room technicians building and testing AV technical equipment for hire to film productions
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues with equipment
  • Provide remote high-level support to operators in the field
  • Work in conjunction with the Technical Director to research new equipment and make procurement decisions
  • Work with our engineering department to design and troubleshoot technical systems
  • Organising component procurement, manufacture and testing
  • Drive innovation and efficiency throughout all our daily processes
  • Use stakeholders’ feedback to inform necessary improvements and adjustments to the company’s technology
  • Keep abreast of new trends and best practices in the technology landscape
  • Identify, compare, select and implement technology solutions to meet current and future needs
  • Assist in the recruitment, onboarding and training of new team members

Candidate Requirements

  • Proven team player
  • Technical experience in a similar industry
  • Understanding of budgets and business-planning
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, combined with analytics to manage complexity within stringent deadlines
  • Organised and process-driven with a high degree of flexibility
  • Conscientious and positive attitude with the ability to work under pressure
  • Adaptability – the company priorities change unexpectedly, candidate needs to be able to change duties at short notice, in line with the business needs

Desirable but not Essential

  • Building and testing AV technical equipment
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout
  • Design experience with system interconnects RS232, USB, I2C, CAN Bus, Ethernet etc.
  • Power supply design
  • Wireless modules/RF experience (e.g. COFDM, WIFI, BLE/Bluetooth, RFID)
  • Design experience with FPGAs, CPLDs and DSPs
  • Verification of prototypes and transfer to manufacture
  • EMC testing, failure analysis

Working Conditions

  • 42.5 hours average per week within our main hours of business – 8am to 6pm – with flexibility to work outside of these hours if required
  • Monday to Friday – occasional weekend hours may sometimes be required
  • Holiday – 25 days per year plus UK bank holidays
